Year of the Tiger: How To Wear Animal Print

Posted by 锦涛 杜 on

1 FEBRUARY 2022  |  BY MARIANNE CHEMUEL  •  5 min read

It’s going to be the Year of the Tiger once 1 February hits, and that means you need to enter the Lunar New Year in style. One of the most important festivals in Chinese culture, it represents the start of spring as well as a new year of opportunity and luck.

Other than spring cleaning and celebrating with each other, shopping is also on the to-do list during this time.

Of course, we love the traditional, rich red that symbolises happiness and good luck in the Chinese culture. However, we wanted to get a little wild with our ensembles, so what better way than rocking some animal print?

Tips On How To Style Animal Print

Your calling this season? To be the queen of the fashion jungle. Fashion’s new neutral, animal print doesn’t have to be something to be intimidated of. Whether you opt for a dainty leopard print or a zebra print in a neutral colourway, there are so many options right now.

Here are some of our tips:

  1. Mix and match! It’s the powerful trend you want to take on this season. Whilst it may sound a little intimidating, it’s a totally achievable style that doesn’t have to be too wild (pun intended).
  2. Animal print skirts are a great way to introduce the pattern into your work ensembles. Opt for a leopard print slip skirt with a plain tee or sweater.
  3. If you’re just dipping your toes into this trend, stick with one animal print to avoid clashing.
  4. Stick to natural-toned animal prints… no hot pink cheetah patterns or bright blue tiger prints around here!
  5. Opt for a dress! It can’t get any easier than popping on one piece that does all the talking for you. Just pair it with minimal and neutral-toned accessories.
  6. For an edgy look, pair some animal print pants with an oversized graphic t-shirt tucked in.

How To Wear An Animal Print Skirt

There are numerous ways you can style your animal print skirt this season. One of the easiest ways is to keep it tonal. For example, pair a midi leopard print skirt with a black crop and beige linen shirt tied at the front. Finish the look with some platform sandals.

Opt for a relaxed fit cheetah maxi skirt to pop on with a satin bolero and high heels for your next special occasion.

To keep things simple, go for a super dainty print mini skirt. Something like a mini skater skirt paired with a puff sleeve crop top and sneakers is perfect for a warm weekend out!

Is Animal Print Appropriate for Work?

Of course, it is! We love wearing animal prints to work. It’s an easy way to quickly elevate your look and make it seem you just came back from fashion week.

You can’t go wrong with midi slip skirts for an elegant look. Style them with a slim basic tee tucked in with some loafers for a smart look.

We also love a printed blouse. It’s a quick way to look put together especially when you pair them tucked under some tailored trousers.

Is Animal Print Still In?

They’re back in fashion and sticking around a while. Animal prints are huge right now. It’s all about not being serious and having fun with dressing this year.

You’ve surely seen zebra prints making their way into the runways as well as the classic leopard and cheetah. From maxi dresses to trousers to slip skirts, printed pieces are an effortless way to look elevated and put together no matter where you’re going.

How Do I Mix Animal Prints?

It’s not as hard as it may seem! Firstly, you can play with proportion and play around with pairing bolder and more graphic prints together.

If you want to play it safe, opt for mixing prints from the same tonal range. Whether you go for a cream/beige tone all-around or a darker palette, sticking to the same colour family helps your outfit look more put together.

One of our favourite combos for animal print is mixing it with red tones (perfect for Chinese New Year!) Go for a leopard print handbag paired with a dainty red floral dress.

Another quick trick, go for inverted colour schemes! It’s a key method to pulling off statement animal prints.

Finally, pair bolder and bigger prints with daintier or finer patterns. Tone the whole ensemble down with neutral accessories in black, beige or white.

What Animal Prints are Trending?

  • Zebra Print: Absolutely everywhere this season, the zebra print is a sleek pattern especially in its natural black and white colourway. It’s one of our favourites because it’s so easy to style with other neutral pieces.
  • Leopard Print: A print must-have. We love it when this print is dainty and adorns maxi skirts for a bohemian look.
  • Snakeskin: For an edgier take on the trend, opt for some snake printed pieces. We love neutral colourways like beige, creams, greys and black. Something like a faux leather snakeskin mini skirt is perfect to wear on a night out with a cami.
  • Tiger Print: It is the year of the tiger after all. Opt for a statement print like this with your sweaters or knits, and style them with basics like denim.
